Week Seven Discussion Part 1

Q Practice Analyzing an Ad Using Fowles In this activity, you will practice the thinking process you'll use to analyze an advertisement of your own choosing in Essay Two. When you write Essay Two, please don't use any of these sample ads, or any of the sample ads from previous lectures and activities. You should find and select an advertisement on your own (any medium is fine). The purpose of this activity is to practice the thinking process that you'll later apply independently. The process you will go through in this activity is similar to the process I modeled in the lecture "How to Analyze an Ad Using Fowles." Below are the five ads you can to choose from for this discussion activity. Choose just one to analyze for this activity. The first file has four print advertisements--these are all ads from a long time ago. (They range from about forty to seventy years old, and the differences between these ads and contemporary ads are pretty interesting.) The fifth ad is a more recent video advertisement. Choose one of these five ads to analyze: • Four Print Advertisements Download Four Print Advertisements • "Play New" Nike Advertisement:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUvEEVq4woU (Links to an external site.) Your Task PART ONE: Post your practice analysis (25 points, 200-250 words): • Choose one of the ads above to analyze; state which ad you've chosen. • Briefly explain the part of the text you'll be using. (This should be one of Fowles's appeals.) • Analyze the ad. Identify at least two details in the ad that represent how the ad is using the strategy described in the text. Be sure to explain how and why these details represent the strategy described in the text. ("This aspect of the ad represents the 'need to nurture' strategy described by Fowles because...".) PART TWO: Read your classmates' analyses. (There is no second post required.) I think you'll find it very helpful to see how different students have analyzed the ads, especially if you're not feeling 100% confident with analysis yet. (Also, you might find it interesting to see how there are often multiple different, sound analyses of the same ad.)

Hennessy Cognac, 1968 Hennessy Cognac, 1968, is the advertisement I have chosen to analyze. It emphasizes the appeal of “need to achieve”. As we all know, Jib Fowles claims that advertisements attempt to link our subconscious urge for affinity with a product. Advertisements capitalize on our want to get near and enjoyably collaborate or reciprocate with another; to satisfy and gain another's affection; to attach and remain loyal to a friend. Strong images, effective language, and powerful music may all be used to appeal to the audience's emotions.
